It’s easy to love Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair when you start. The platformer is bursting with bright, saturated hues at every turn, with a whimsical soundtrack that’s as catchy as it is cheery. It’s a delightful veneer that quickly gives way to an otherwise predictable and unremarkable platformer. Despite changing its formula from full 3D to 2.5D, Yooka-Laylee is still too firmly rooted in a bygone era for platformers.

This shortcoming is hard to see at first, especially with Impossible Lair’s intriguing setup. In theory, the Impossible Lair is an endgame challenge you can attempt in the opening moments of the game. It’s a gauntlet of spike traps and moving platforms, populated to the brim with enemies ready to chew you up and spit you back out. Each stage outside of the Lair is meant to help you with this. You’re rewarded with a bee when you complete a stage, each acting as an additional hit point when you attempt the Lair once more. Gathering as many bees as you can lets you push further in while affording you more mistakes. The semiconductor shortage that is affecting everything from computers to car production has also affected game console production. According to Nintendo, it doesn’t have issues right now with making new consoles, but that could change as we move further into 2021.

In an interview with Nikkei (via VGC), Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa said that while the company has the materials it needs for “immediate production of semiconductors” necessary for Nintendo Switch units, that could change later.

“However, in Japan and other countries, demand has been very strong since the beginning of the year, and there is a possibility of shortages at some retailers in the future,” Furukawa added.

Thus far, it has been a perfect storm of difficulties in acquiring a new game console. This has been true particularly for the Switch’s main competitors, the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, which released last November but have been extremely tough to find. Retailers’ supplies were limited out of the gate, and many brick-and-mortar businesses weren’t stocking the system at all. A big update for Konami’s eFootball 2022–which has been overrun with issues since launch–is still on the way, but fans will have to wait a little longer for it to arrive.

Konami informed players on Twitter that the 0.9.1 patch, which was originally scheduled for launch on October 28, is now coming sometime in November. “We sincerely apologize for the delay and the inconvenience caused. Our hope is that the additional time taken will allow us to ensure the experience is improve for all of our users,” Konami said in a statement.

Konami will announce the release date and other details for the 0.9.1 patch at a later date. After announcing the acquisition deal in June, Evolution has completed the Nolimit City takeover. Evolution AB has entered into an agreement to acquire the entire issued share capital of Nolimit City Holding Ltd for a consideration payable in cash.

The autobattling head-to-head RPG where you play inventory tetris to build your character, Bakcpack Battles, released its Early Access build this week. Each round you go up against a build made by another player before hitting up the shop to grab a new stuff with the gold you’ve won. It’s like PvP but without the stress of a real-time game—the person you’re “playing against” made that build hours ago, maybe.

Backpack Battles first got my attention last fall when its multiplayer demo got something like 7,000 concurrent players one weekend. It’s topping those numbers this weekend with a peak of nearly 20,000 concurrent players—19,775 to be exact.

The neat part of Backpack Battles is how you make your character: You sew on new parts and pouches to your backpack in order to change the space available and its shape, because each item you add to it synergizes depending on what it’s placed next to.
